I have a 15-1994 on hold but understand a new
model 15-2104 is now available. Does anyone
know what the differences are and if it is worth
paying an additional $10 for the new model?
I've read a lot of info about how good the 1994
is but nothing yet about the 2104 since it is
so new.

thx,

Rich

That's funny. The 2104 is listed at $10 cheaper in the new Canadian RS catalog, although we probably won't get stock until a couple of months after the U.S.

I think only time, and the veneral Robman, will tell! ;-)

Get the 15-1994. We've been looking at the 15-2104, but it lacks many of the useful functions of the 15-1994. The most important of which is the ability to use long macros (15 key presses) on any key. the 15-2104 limits you to using only 3 key presses on 4 buttons only. You can work around that if you have made a JP1 interface connection ([Link: hifi-remote.com]), but for the user who wants to use it straight out of the box, it this is a seriously limiting feature

If you have no interest in using macros to control multiple functions with one button push, then the 15-2104 does have some interesting features like Genre keys where you can store 3 favorite channels for rapid access.

I have also found that the 15-2104 is much less ergonomic than the 15-1994. The 15-1994 feels great in your hand, and the button are laid out very nicely. The 15-2104 has also changed the channel and volume keys to individual buttons instead of rocker switches found on the 15-1994. The rockers are much easier to use.

To summarize, IMO i would get the 15-1994 (they are going to be REAL hard to find soon) as my everyday remote. It is cheaper and has more functionality right out of the box.

I have already started a thread on the 15-2104 over in the One For All/Radio Shack forum, which is a better place to discuss Radio Shack remotes than here in the general forum.

Here's a link to the thread....

Just ran across this new 2104 Radio Shack remote on the Shack's web site. I've had one of the 1994 units for over a year and wanted to find out more about the new model.
None of the previous messages address the following feature I've read about on the Shack's web site:
"This 6-in-1 Remote Control uses 2-color backlighting to simplify the operation of your home theater. When you select a component, the buttons that operate that component are highlighted with an individual color."
To me this sounds interesting... Am I missing something or is this feature not attractive to anyone else. I'm sort of looking for a remote that I might buy for my mom, my girlfriend, etc. Any feature that would simplify things would be a bonus here, that's why the 2-color button thingy sounded good.
Actually, I think the single most confusing thing for occassional users of multi-device remotes is figuring out (remembering) what mode the remote is in. I think having a small LCD screen to say... "you are now in the DVD Mode" or the "Receiver" mode would be best. Not sure what the cheapest such remote would be.
thanks
Ken

Your best bet for a remote with such a screen is the RCA RCU810 which sells for around $50 at Best Buy but can be had for around $20 on ebay.

Other remotes that qualify are the Radio Shack 15-1995 and the One For All Producer 8 series.
