just stumbled on this website... very cool and informative!!

looking for a great universal remote for my sony stereo stack, my sony vcr, sony 53" tv and digital cable box. need something easy enough for my wife a kids.

wondered with the dearth of hard buttons, how to control functions such as PIP which generally require 3-4 buttons, etc.

how does this remote compare to the sony 2100 which i have been looking at or the new rca rcu-1000b?

any input would be helpful.

Hello All,

This posting is to say 'thank you' to all the people that have helped out so much over the past month. As our Beta Testers can tell you, the Harmony has been improving by leaps and bounds.

We still have a long way to go before we reach the 'perfect' remote control. However, we have had so many applications to join the Beta Program that we cannot take very many more. As a result, Easy Zapper Inc. will no longer be accepting applications to join the Harmony Beta Test Program as of 5pm Wednesday 24 October (Eastern time). We will continue to solicit input from our Beta Testers (and future customers) to improve the product and web site.

Stay tuned for the official launch of the Harmony.

If you wish to join the Harmony Beta Test Program, please click on the link below and click on the 'Buy' option:

Thanks again,

Glen Harris

Mine just arrived!! YAY!! I opened my front door, and there it was, waiting patiently like a prom date. Hey, wait. Why am I sitting here typing away, when I could go open the FedEx box and start playing? Later, gang.

Larry: in Alfa's absence: "language detection"
refers to the ability of the Harmony Tutor software
to recognize and digitize the command strings
from the OEM remote. Since there aren't too many
Devices in the database yet, most of us are teaching
the software what components we have in the same
way a Learning remote is taught.

Mike, I have been playing with my Harmony for a couple of days but I haven't been able to get digitized command strings from my OEM Dishplayer 7220 sat. receiver. I can get the Harmony to receive three consecutive and adequate IR signals, but it doesn't send me back any info on the digitized string. Still awaiting a response from the support team. Do you have any secrets/tips you can pass on?

John

Oh... what to do! I was just trying to decide between a MX-500, and wanted to look into the new RCA1000b. And now it looks like I have a few precious hours to decide if I want into the beta test. HELP!!! I can only sneak one of these by the wife. I have all sony components ( pretty standard) and a Phillips Tivo and Magnavox TV. Are the Standalone Tivo codes online yet for the Harmony?>

I wouldn't even put the RCA1000b in the same league as the MX-500 (or the Harmony).

Well, I haven't really read any reviews of the new RCA remote, And haven't seen it in person. Do you think this Harmony might get the crowd acceptance like the MX-500 did? They are both around the same price right now... I just need to know which one to get, and apparently before tomorrow by five.

Maybe y'all can assist me a bit.

I've tried to program the Easy Zapper several times. It seems the Tutorial isn't working right. I've been printing the Worksheets, but I don't get a chance to use them. When I try running the Characterization, after teaching the remote my Power button pattern, it says to select Applications for this Device or Home, I pick Applications, and it takes me to the Home page anyway. Also, the EasyZapper won't show me the Detect language option. I downloaded the software more than once, so that's not it.

Any ideas?
Larry

I agree, Anthony. They are quite dissimilar in many ways.

I can't see buying the RCA remote. Not versatile enough for me given the minor online price difference to move to the MX-500.

The jury is still out on the Harmony, which is why I put it in brackets. I am finding that it takes too long to do some very simple tasks that I do on the MX-500. But, it has the potential to be an all around FAMILY remote for a "more than 3 component" type system.

The MX-500 is my main workhorse for my 7 component system.

Everyone's mileage may vary, obviously!

shpallster: no problem with wife and kids using the Harmony. The Harmony is small enough to easily fit into a child's hand, and it doesn't look intimidating like some remotes...it has a fraction of the buttons. I found my kids can use it intuitively, maybe with a look over their shoulder at first because the scroll wheel is new for them. My kids have a huge video collection...in my setup, Harmony's power button powers TV & VCR, and with the scroll wheel you go to "play a video tape" on the LCD screen, really simple. The biggest problem is keeping the pizza and pop off the Harmony, maybe they'll come out with a waterproof version.

Papa John: I haven't been fiddling with my Harmony for a couple of days (my new digital camera has kind of taken over my life), but unless they changed everything while I was gone: only one of three things will happen when you digitize a device:

- it will fail to accept three signals in a row, so you must keep trying
- it will accept three in a row, and return an error message saying it doesn't recognize the signal but offers to let you use it anyway, at which point you will be taken to the website again, where you will see a statement showing the command string (which is static; you can't do anything with it)
- it will accept three in a row, and take you back to the site where you eventually carry on digitizing, or start checkin for Activities and such.

Is your experience showing something different? ... Mike

Larry:

1. See above answer to Papa John about the code strings.

2. There is a sort of "mental disconnect" on the website after digitizing occurs, and you expect to do one thing, and it takes you somewhere else. Something I'mnot sure I mentioned to EasyZapper in fact. However, later today there should be a newer version of the site. Perhaps this "disconnect" has been fixed. If not, I'll talk to 'em.

Meantime, it should have no effect on the programming of your Activies and Characterizations... just carry on and pick up where you left off. ... Mike
