With Respect

I have a Magnavox CMWR20V6 DVD recorder whose own remote control is broken.

I have tried to program a Phillips SRP 2006/27 universal remote to control the DVDR. It works in some ways but I cannot access the Menu or (usually) Setup screens and functions for the DVDR/VCR itself, as opposed to the Menu screens for the disk that is in it.

This means:

A. I was unable to correct the DVDR's clock until one time I unexpectedly got a limited Setup screen on starting the DVDR, which went away once I had reset the time.

B. I cannot reset the Mode from SP to SLP, so get two hours of recording on each DVD instead of eight hours.

C. I cannot set the DVDR to record when I am not there to start it

Can anyone suggest a sequence of buttons or other procedure that would allow me to access the DVDR's menu and timer programming with the Phillips universal remote?

Yours Sincerely,

Alan E. Dunne

Cheap Philips universal remotes are not what you should be using if you want to find commands not included in the preset codes. Only UEI made universal remotes give you access to advanced codes or EFC's, these are 5-digit codes for individual functions. They're built-in but are hidden, you would need to map the code to unused key. Then you could teach whatever universal remote you want to use.

Like this One-For-All urc-3680 on amazon:

Or this Insignia at Best Buy:

Or this Onn 6 at Walmart:

Try a clone remote from Remotes World.
(I am not a salesperson, but that worked for me...)

I was able to get my UEI remotes to perform all functions by copying them from the clone (using an IR detector).
