You'll *need* to use WiFi. Wireless routers or access points can be had really cheap now.

USB can currently only be used to upgrade the firmware.

Daniel,

The original promise date of MARCH came and went and now the latest release date of APRIL is also gone.

Any idea if the thing will be released in MAY or is it still too far from ready to release?

The bad news...

Right now it looks like the entire new lineup of Pronto's aren't scheduled to be released until... maybe September.

The good news...

The good news is that there are quite a few new models coming, not just the RC9800i. The RC9800i will be the replacement model for the current iPronto. The other remotes will be aimed at going up against the Harmony remote lineup. Much easier to use but still more customizeable than the Harmony products.

As we get closer to the launch date, I will be able to release more information.

where did you get this info because if you try to call philips about this remote they have no idea when it is coming out, and on the home control site it says april-usa, september-europe. that post on the home control site was last updated on march 2nd 2005. i have a pre order that can't be refunded!

Hi, thank you for all the useful info. I'm still a little fuzzy on how the RC9800i works with a PC. I have a PC hooked up via a soundcard to my stereo. Will the RC9800i allow me to browse my files and select an audio file and "play" it just like I would be able to using my mouse?

Thanks

The RC9800i does not control a PC, it controls a Media Player (a device that accesses audio, video & picture content on your PC over a network for playback through a stereo & tv). The RC9800i will also let you preview MP3s and pictures on the remote.

Although it still is not clear if it will only work with the Phillips Media Player or if it will support 3rd party players such as the Roku Soundbridge. Or if it will work on Mac or is limited to only PC. A lot of hype but not much substance in the details. Just my humble opinion.

Well, I went into the web site and registered my EPG. It is kind of interesting, the local HD channels are missing from the 'local broadcasts' and one HD channel is missing from the digital channels (it was just added). I'm not sure what to think. In the manual the examples of the EPG aren't very good. I'm real curious about the EPG because the HD TV I have has a cable card in it so I don't have the (interactive) cable EPG and that would be a big plus if that worked out with this remote.

This might be a strange question and I'm new to this, but:
Will the software for controlling 9800i be available (to buy!?) for other handheld devices.
I ask this question because I have recently brought the streamium SL300 as a test system to see how efficient Wifi / Upnp music servers are. (+ I have lots of music on my PC!)

The SL300 is good but lacks a good display interface with Philips PMM (no backlight and small display). I would like to control the Music Server from my Pocket PC as this has Wifi... I currently use my Pocket PC to control most of my remotes (thanks to Remote Central)

Or alternatively is there other software that I can use?

Thanks in advance....

Somewhere in one of these 9800i forums there is a link to the companies' web site that wrote the software for the 9800. I followed the link and looked at it a little. It looked like they mostly OEM the software if I remember right but check it out, it should be easy to find it because there's not much in the 9800 forums yet.

Just in case you did not see the other post that I responded to here is the link to register for the electronic program guide. The EPG is available for other countries. If you go through the registration you can find out if your country is supported.

[Link: homecontrol.philips.com]

You register along the right side column.
