Hi everyone.

I am considering this remote to control my equipment.

I have

Yamaha DSP A1 Amplifier
Sony KDL32V2000 TV
Sony DVPNS76H
Topfield TF5000PVRT (MP)
Yamaha TX480 Tuner
Xbox 360

We have various Loewe TVs and topfield STB's in other rooms.

I am in australia and usually we have more European models or very close.

I will probably buy a US version and upgrade the firmware.

Can someone tell me how often have philips upgrade the firmware and the codes Database or doesnt this really matter.

I just want to simpy the whole remote thing and can't really justify a pronto.

Will I have any problems on the power supply etc?

Any opinions would be gratefull as I am down to either this or a harmony 880

Thanks in advance

Well, Philips hasn't updated the firmware in quite a while, and from the looks of things it seems there might not be anymore updates. I guess it only matters if the remote can do the things you want - it handles multiple rooms nicely, but isn't really customizable.

I can't recall if the RC9800i's charger has 110v and 220v support. If you buy the remote locally then you should be fine.

this or a harmony 880

Your best option (if possible) would be to try both and return the one you like the least.

I have installed many Harmonys and a few of these. The harmonys are great remotes, but there are hardware quality issues that can be frustrating. If you are lucky enough to get a good one on the first try, it is a very nice remote.

You can program it from a web site, and that's great if you have a fast connection. If not, it can be pretty SLOW. Even with its deficiencies it is probably the best consumer grade activity based remote on the market, and comes in an RF version (890) as well. It is much more customizable and flexible than the Phllips RC9800i and can be tuned to accurately control most any device via IR. Harmony has a huge database of IR codes, but occasionally you find bad ones and have to relearn them. Given its huge installed base, vitually every device on the planet is recognized to one degree or another, greatly saving on learning time.

Be that as it may, you still have to understand how to solve problems. The good news is that the facility to solve problems is there. Which is more than can be said for the RC9800i.

Harmony's do lack a wifi connection and therfore the ability to control UPnP devices and offer an on screen program guide. If you don't have either of these requirements, then the 880 or 890 is probably going to be a better choice.

Good luck with it.

How is the 9800i not customizable? Don't Pronto's all have some sort of ProntoEdit or similar software for 100% control over the menus/macros/etc?

Or is this model a bit 'cheaper' than previous editions?

I have the old TSU3500/RU960 and greyscale is wearing a little thin now :) But it's ability to design the menus and macros is second to none...

You're right and therefore this is not a pronto device and designed with a different philosophy. So to set things strait, this remote is NOT programmable with software and therefore not suitable for an exotic hardware setup. If you need customization you might want to look at the newest pronto remote which is programmable and has a similar design, but be prepared to spend a few $$$$$$.

this remote doesn't support designing macro's and menus either.

Then it's OUT and the Logitech Harmony 880 is IN :) thanks!
