I bought a RC9800i and have tried to input a number of my AV devices. I have a new Panasonic plasma TV and a new Yamaha reciever. When I enter the model number into the remote I am prompted to go throught the learning process with the remote. Is this normal? (I thought that the remote would have a database of devices - it takes me about 30 min per device to teach the remote each new device).
If this is normal, then this is a piece of junk and I will send it back - if I am doing something wrong please let me know

Yes, it's normal. The device doesn't store remote info by model #, but by specific codes instead. Once you enter the new device, you should attempt to match the device to the remote by learning (checking) a few codes.
