WJJZ (are you in the Philly area?!) Your comment
is exactly why I started this post. There are
much more powerful and cheaper solutions out there
than the Pronto. I think too many installers
are still using them because that's all they know.
Sometimes they are so involved with what they
are doing they don't take the time to look outside
the box and see what else is out there. I am
proposing a revolt against Philips! We need to
show them that we will not tolerate their lack
of innovation and lack of competitive pricing.
This is just like windows and dell. People use
them because that's what they know and they know
it well, not because it's the superior platform
of choice, easiest to use or best value for the
buck.

oxjox -

I understand your point, but the way you express yours comes across as borderline obtrusive. Blanket statements are not the way to go.

I try keep an open mind when making a big purchase. Figuring out which product would suit my needs (comparison shopping). Read as much feedback as I can about the item (forums are a wonderful thing :-). Try to stay within my budget. Bottom line: did the purchase make the consumer happy?

In my case, the Philip's TSU7000 did!

I guess you can say I'm outside your box when it comes to Philips Remote Control products. Good luck with your revolt.

p.s - I was born in Philadelphia and took a liking to contemporary jazz music. Hence the tag name.

p.p.s - I also own a Apple Mac.

Ok - so where are these 3500's coming from??? A**D doesn't have them yet. Where are you guys getting these from?

I think there is a significant market for an under $500 touch screen. If the screen is better than the ukky 3000 screen, it will probably sell pretty well.

What should a technologically savvy do-it-yourselfer consider as an alternative?

I just dropped a sizable chunk of my disposable income on a new flat screen, a decent receiver, DVD player, and speakers. By the time you factor in the cable box & DVR, I'd like to round it out by consolidating the 5 remote controls I now have into a single package. I planning on buying a Pronto, and was going to hold out until the 3500 was available. Should I look elsewhere?

Dave,

Got mine from A**D. Honest.

BTW, the 3500 doesn't look nearly as good as the prototype I saw at CEDIA in Sept. The prototype had this really nice blue background with black/grey graphics. The shipping version has a screen with blue/brown elements. Very odd color.

Just did a 3500 the other day, the screen just seemed so washed out. I messed with the brightness and contrast a little, just never got what I thought was very good. I think the jump with the 7000 to the 7500 was a good one, can't say that with the 3000 to the 3500. Except forthe fact it seemd to work quicker, macros seemed to execute so much faster. And a world of difference with the RF extenders. We try to bring a mix to the table, Crestron for the budget abled, Pronto for the touch scre en for those who are not as abled, and RTI for stellar RF and hard buttons.

Maybe I wasn't impressed so much was because it was a temporary replacement for a Crestron touch panel.

I have to say that Philips, like most large companies just does not provide much in the way of support. Philips is no different. You have a problem with Crestron or RTI and you will get support. I e-mailed RTI on a job the other day, after hours, and it took almost 20 minutes to get a reply. Crestron, which you pay for, provides support like very few companies I have ever dealt with. I have actually had on more than one occasion had somebody call me back after an intial call to follow up to see how things were going.

I think so. Dave is just "sowing" seeds of love but his eyes are "sewn"/"sewed" shut.

hehee..I was actually trying to distract you guys from the testosterone fog and hi-jack the thread...LOL

Like Dawn, I saw the prototype at CEDIA and it was a very decent screen. Crisp, kind of grey-blue hue to it and it had a lot of promise. I guess Philips decided on a different screen in the production model.

My A**D guys in Norcal are really the best. I haven't checked with them in a week or so. Sounds like the unit finally hit the shelves.

I was hoping for a decent, lower-priced touchscreen to add to my offering. I guess I'll buy one and give it a test drive. I guess it has to be better than the 3000 screen???

Thx all - Dave

I've just fired up an RU960 (TSU3500) and I agree with all of the comments from the openning post... The subtle colour change of the surround (from blue/green to black) is open to debate, however the silver painted finish is poor compared to the previous model... The hard buttons have a much better feel and the new OK button and 'chimney' on the home button are welcome changes... Now onto the screen, good and bad here, it has much better brightness, but the contrast is very poor, that combined with the sepia tone makes it look cheap...

Overall - not much difference really...

PS The new RF unit is a BIG improvement :-)...
