Joe,
As Peter says, the Pronto resembles a small computer more than a typical remote. Reboot will be an occassional event. I have read, throughout this forum, that reboots were not just a symptom of the "reboot problem" but has been caused by battery level, certain unknown CCF's and also occured after units were dropped from a medium distance.

Should you call and initiate an exchange? Only you can decide if you can live with the level of reboot you currently experience or not. Philips will ask you to send in your unit (writing s/n on outside of box), call with a tracking number and then order you a refurbished replacement. How new is your unit and how bad is the reboot?

John,
I'm afraid I don't know any specifics on the new versions.

Dyltone,
Congrats!!! This is a long thread. :)

Well I had my pronto for a few months on the old firmware and never had any problems at all. I updated the firmware when it became available and now I'm gettting reboots. The batteries are fresh and it hasn't been dropped. Is there a way to go back to the old firmware?

I am still suffering from reboots. They seem to happen with my DISHPlayer controls only (of course that is 95% of my use). I have relearned the codes and this may have helped. Certain codes seem to cause more reboots than others. Can anyone else with a DISHPlayer provide some info on this?
Thank you.

Lisa,
I am experiencing 1-2 reboots per evening. My Pronto only reboots when we are waking the unit up by touching the screen. We watch televsion 1-3 hours per evening, and I estimate that we use the remote 4-5 times per hour, (touch the screen to activate the Pronto). That says we are activating the LCD/backlight 4-15 times per night, which suggests we are having reboots about 1 out of 10 times that we wake the unit up.

I'm in the electronics industry, and this problem sounds like a hardware margin problem. Either the backlight or LCD are creating enough electrical noise in the system to cause the Pronto to reboot. These kinds of problems crop up when parts are used very near the extreme of their operating spec, or when parts do not meet spec. My fear is that this problem will get worse over time.

If I want to have this fixed do I need to be without until Philips gets the bad one, or can I receive the replacement before I send in the defective one?

Joe,
I know it's said many times in the forum. But repeating it only makes sure no one is left without clue. :)

Call the customer Care Center, give all your information and that of the Protno. Obtain a case number and an address to send the Pronto to.

Once you ship it, call with the UPS tracking number. The agent has to verify the unit is in transit and can immediately order the replacement. It goes out UPS next day. Calling early should have it shipped out same day.

Send in ONLY the Pronto and keep your original box. Write the s/n on the outside for ease of processing once it is received.

This will be a refurbished unit, though it's appereance should be acceptable.

There has been a back order since last week, but stock should be arriving any day.

P.S. Warranty on the Pronto is 1 year. A replacement carries the remainder of that year starting from the original date of purchase.

Richard, Download ProntoEdit 1.05 and upgrade the firmware to 4.85
This should take care of your problem.

Finally, a WORKING Pronto! My first Pronto used up batteries at a rate of a set a day and locked up whenever batteries were changed. My second booted incessantly and continued to do so even after the fix. It used a full charge of a set of NiMH batteries in one to two days. Now, finally, I have a Pronto that doesn't reboot and is as frugal in battery consumption as I had read on this forum! And this is using the same CCF as I used on the previous two! I had been told by the first retailer I bought from, a renowned "security and home theatre Pronto expert" that my computer skills were deficient and that I just wasn't intellectually up to owning a Pronto. With the second, Philips led me on for nearly two months with assurances that a software fix would be forthcoming, only to find that this fix didn't work on my Pronto and that I would probably have to accept a refurbished replacement remote. I was fed up. But a helpful CSR at Philips 888 number managed to get me a new working Pronto, it even has the light level sensor (not that this is all that useful). I think there are definately QC problems with these things. But my current one has not rebooted in three days (PTL) and I am finally satisfied. I know I will now hear that I am a whiner and that someone didn't have any troubles with theirs, but for $300 (or more), I think every single person deserves a working remote. I also think the refurbished replacement policy is unworthy of a company that makes a product that is as conceptually advanced as a Pronto.

Tom: Far from it -- if your remote was eating batteries, something really was wrong. I've heard of this a few times and, from what you discovered, the only solution was a new remote. Also, the reboot fix doesn't work for 100% of remotes.
