I recently dragged out my "Renewed by Philips" TS1000 that I've carried with me for a dozen years. And I can't download to it or upload from it.

I think, based on similar experiences with URC, that my computer might be trying to use the wrong port. How do you check this and correct it?

I get a totally blank error message -- nothing there. This is also what I get with TSS and a Marantz RC5200.

Yes, using the latest software from RC, also used for years and years.

I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad T420, running Windows 7, and I'm running the software in Administrator mode. I'm using a URC cable + a null modem, which I've used successfully before... but I'm not sure I've used it successfully with this computer. Just to verify, I just tried it without the null modem. Nothing.

The USB to RS232 adaptor is a TrendNet TU-S9. That also might be the issue.

Anyway, help!?

and Thanks.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie,

From Windows do:

Start->Run->devmgmt.msc (or search for Device Manager if you don't have the 'Run' menu enabled)

Under Device Manager, look at Ports (LPT and COM) to see what ports you have. Ensure that your Pronto is connected to the first Serial port that is there. COM1 usually. If you have the Pronto connected for example to COM4 and there is another device connected on COM3..COM1, the software is attempting to connect to that device instead of your Pronto.

Thanks, Lyndel, though I have not had a chance to check that out yet. I suspect my old refurb TS1000 is dead, so I bought another TS1000. It was on ebay for $20 plus shipping, so... but if it works, it's in beautiful condition.

The latest one, the twenty buck one, appears to start up but there's zero graphics on the screen. The lighted portion of the screen is distinctly outlined, though.

When you push reset for about 3 seconds, after about fifteen seconds it chirps twice. I've done this numerous times and I think a few of those times it chirped just once.

Any ideas, before I put more time into this? Will I have to go through the process of halting its OS loading... I don't remember what the steps were for that, nor even the software.

Thanks.

There may be something in the FAQ about manually uploading firmware using a terminal program. I have not touched one of these units in over 10 years.

Yup. Found what I think will fix it. The dreaded term "Hyperterminal" is in there as big as life. From 2004.

Thanks.
