Daniel wrote an article which you can read here: [Link: remotecentral.com]. I'm not a graphics artist, but I've had some success with Paint Shop Pro. The learning curve on these programs is very steep if you're not an experienced user.

I have been using a program called Image Forge Version 3.38. It is available as a freeware for trail period. I have had good success with sizing bitmaps, removing items from graphics to match what I want and adding. Its quick to learn and easy to use.

I've used this as well. You can get an older, totally free version here: [Link: cursorarts.com].

I really recommend Paint Shop Pro. There are some basic things you need to learn, e.g. layers and once you do, you can actually produce some surprisingly professional looking results.
