Is there any way to have the touch screen not turn on when you use the hard buttons on the bottom or the volume and channel buttons?

Nope. In the early days, (the RC-5000) the screen wouldn't turn on when you used the hard buttons, but they changed the firmware. Since then, all models operate this way, damn shame.

Jim, how long does your battery last? On mine, If it is fully charged it will last about a day and a half before I have to recharge it.

It goes 3 to 4 days. You might try setting the backlight timeout value to a lower number. Mine is set to 8 seconds. There are also larger batteries available from a 3rd party that reportedly increases the life substancially, see here: [Link: 64.252.62.40]
