Hi does anyone know how to change pronto edit to use a different serial port than com 1? I have a sony Vaio PC which had no com ports. I have added a serial port card which nows gives me com 4 and com5, however I cannot get it to talk to the pronto.

Any help appreciated.

you cannot tell PE what port to use. It starts at com1 and continues until it finds the Pronto or (probably in your case) it finds an unused port.

reassign your Com ports to 1 and 2. XP lets you do this within the Device manager.

If you have not solved your problem, the following may help. I have a Sony PCVRS422X. The factory-installed configuration had COM1 reserved for a "DOSdevice" (you can confirm if your Sony is similarly configured by performing a search on COM1 in the Registry), or better, goto ContolPanel\System\Hardware\DeviceManager\Ports and click on your Serial device. Click on PortSettings\Advanced. Scroll up to COM1 in the COM Port Number dialog box. If it says "COM1 (in use)," you have confirmed that COM1 is in fact reserved. If your Pronto acts like mine, it will only work on COM1. Therefore, you would need to freeup COM1. On my system, COM1 was reserved for the Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). To check this, go to ControlPanel\PowerOption\UPS. If you have a UPS, change the COM Port from COM1 to COM2. If not, just change the UPS Manufacturer -to "None."
