I am having trouble using the IR Tool. When I paste in the HEX for a learned IR code, and DECODE, it gives me the message: "The hex code is not a learned code. IR Tool only works with learned codes."

Well, it IS a learned code. Here is the hex:
5000 0072 0000 0001 0000 0001

I get the same error for every button on this device. Here are a few more, which shows there is a pattern:
5000 0072 0000 0001 0000 000d
5000 0072 0000 0001 0000 0010
5000 0072 0000 0001 0000 0011

The reason I ask is that I'm trying to search for some discretes. The remote control does not have discrete buttons, but the designer has told me discretes exist. He hasn't had time to dig these up yet - and I hate to keep pestering him (he's been very helpful in other ways). I've tried a number of variations of the hex shown above, but with no luck. Any suggestions for which part of the hex string I should play with?

The device is an ASPEN GK-1 Pre-amp.

Codes that start with 5000 are RC5 codes.

I think IR Tool only works with general codes that start with 0000.

RC5 codes are entered directly in ProntoEdit using device number and command number.

I beleive that any hex starting with 0000 is an indication that it is learned and not RC5/6. Good luck.

IR Tool isn't perfect. Even the improved version from the Yahoo JP1 group only supports hex codes beginning with "0000" and gives that same misleading error message for all other forms of Pronto Hex.

5000 0072 0000 0001 0000 0011

The reason I ask is that I'm trying to search
for some discretes.

The last two digits represent the command number in hex. (11 is command 17). Possible commands range from 00 to 7F.

The second to last 4-digit number is the "System" code. (So it is zero for your example). Using the "Advanced" button from the "Add IR" window, you can get to an RC5/6 window. If you select RC5 and System 0, you can enter a number from 0 to 127 as the command. That may be easier than pasting in edited Pronto Hex. It stores the same thing as the Pronto Hex above.

The remote control does not
have discrete buttons, but the designer has told
me discretes exist.

Hopefully the discretes use the same protocol and "system" as the ordinary commands. At least one brand uses RC5 for ordinary commands but uses RC5x for the discrete commands. Those would be much harder to search unless you know the rules used by the brand.
