Well guys, I really don't know what brand is best or what I should expect to pay, but I would like an IR receiver to control functions on my computer. Here's my wants, maybe you could help me out:

- want to run WinAMP playlists
- flexibility to do more is always better (i enjoyed doing a total custom TSU1000 ccf...just so you know I'll put in the legwork if needed)
- not too bulky
- has a cord so that the IR receiving unit doesn't have to be too close to the computer (would prefer 10 feet or more since my computer is hidden)
- any other features are welcome

Thanks in advance!!

Do you think that the 3 buttons there would be sufficient to control WinAMP? I was a little fuzzy on why the remote had a full host of buttons, yet only had 3 to run computer commands. Is the Streamzap also intended to be a universal home theatre remote?

BTW: Thanks for the link, or advice to pan my eyes to the left.:)

I've been looking into this and have found that there are several options for both the device and the software. First word of caution, DO NOT BUY OR ATTEMPT TO USE an IrDA device. Chances are high that you will not be able to make it work.

Here is a page on the supported devices of uICE - a freeware software product for controlling the PC using an IR device.

Also, check out www.ir2pc.com.

Finally, it appears that the unit featured here could be a good option - it is pretty cheap, has the IR device and the software, and already has codes assigned for learning, so setup would be pretty quick.

Good luck
