I recently got an MX950, and tonight was my first time in the editor.

When I first played around with the remote (running the default demo stuff out of the box), when the backlight timer tripped the backlight went off but I'm pretty sure the LCD display stayed on--just unlit. At that point, I'm pretty sure the firmware was 1.37.

Tonight I synced the remote with the editor after LiveUpdating (twice--once from the x.046 that shipped with the remote, and once from the x.063 that the first LU pulled down) from version x.065 of the editor. What I didn't notice was that the firmware that was included was 1.35, which it happily synced to the MX950. Now my remote reports 1.35 in System and in the Firmware dialog in the editor.

So, now when my backlight timer trips, the entire display shuts off. If I disable the backlight on the LCD, then the (unlit) LCD shuts off when the timer runs out. It comes back on again when the movement switch is triggered, so I guess it all still works, but I'm more troubled about the downgrade. Was I seeing things?

Also, as long as I'm asking out-there questions, I noticed something weird about the MX-950's display. If I look at it obliquely from the bottom...that is, sight from the bottom to the top with the remote held more or less horizontally to my eyes...I see the contrast on the LCD varying in sort of a "wave" pattern. That is, there's a wave of blur that travels up the screen. I don't see it when looking at the screen at a near-90 degree angle, and just happened to notice it when the remote was laying on the table and hadn't gone to standby yet.

Do other peoples' MX-950s do this? I'm trying to catch any potential hardware issues early.

When the backlight shuts off, the screen should go blank. I don't recall it working any other way with mine.

Can't say that I see any uneven difference in contrast with mine viewed horizontally (it uniformly gets darker), but I may be misinterpreting what you're saying.

Mike, thanks. Memory's a tricky thing, I guess.

As for the second bit, it's not really noticeable on the blue LED (because blue's rather dim, even at max, on mine). But if you crank the brightness up, and look at it at at 45 deg angle or less, you can see a block of low contrast trace up the screen. The brighter the LEDs, the faster it traces, so it might be a voltage regulator thing. It's kind of weird.

Again, not apparent when you're actually looking directly at the LCD, but noticeable when you're pointing it at the system (since then the remote is horizontal and pointing away from you).

Oh, and there are no fluorescent lights in the room. It did look an awful lot like the funkiness you sometimes get from fluors interacting with LCD refresh though.
