I have a new Harmony remote. It's been setup using the web site. I've yet to see anything on the remote's screen except a line or two and a solid black box.
I've unloaded and loaded the batteries a couple of times hoping to reset the thing. No joy.
If anyone has any suggestions how to get this thing to do anything useful, I'm all ears.

I'm assuming you've sync'ed to the web site. If you have, sounds similar to mine except it wouldn't do much when trying to talk to the web site. Kept crashing. Returned it. New unit - flawless.

Yep, I had exactly the same fault with mine. They sent me a replacement and it now works fine.
I think this is one of the more common hardware problems.
