Combining an old account with a new one. I originally started here in 1999 with the login "CJ O'Neill." When I came back later, I had forgotten my password and created a new account. I asked Dan if he could combine the two accounts and at the time he had said it wasn't possible.

in 99 there were no accounts. You would just type in a handle on every post (well a cookie would save it for you) so anyone could use any handle (I even remember once when there was a conversation between me and someone else that was using Anthony). In May 2001 Daniel created the registered user with password. If you look at your "CJ O'Neill" posts (assuming they were all before May 2001) you would see classic post. When Daniel instituted the new registered site/user, he asked if some wanted to fake the registration date (which explains why some have an older registered date). But even if the registered date is older, their older posts are not linked to their ID

I guess that's why I couldn't remember my password!

wait a minute, if that's true, why couldn't I register an account later with that user name?

Then, as previously mentioned, there's the curious case of freddyfreeload/FreddyFreeloader. Two user names, but seemingly only one account.

unlike DJY I did not do a search or anything (just going by what you said). Maybe between the day registration started and the day you registered this account, you or someone else registered that other one?

Like I said above
