The information I got from CEDIA for the unit depth is for a production unit.

Also, you do not have to pay for the naming databases. They have an agreement with both of the companies.

From what I know from Kenwood Canada, the Sovereign line will be available later this year.

In lieu of that, you can order ANYTHING from ANY ONLINE DEALER using the software from BorderFree.com.

If you have any problems using the software, please ask or email me.

[ EDIT: Just a while after making this post, I got an email for Borderfree.com saying they have stopped their usual way of doing business, and will be signing up individual businesses only. Sorry! ]

Has anyone received a DV-5050 yet? I have one on order from Crutchfield and have questions about it if anyone has one.

got the 5900 last week. It is DEEP, had to cut a hole in my cabinet. Probably 4-6 inches deeper than the rest of my stuff. Netnamer software not yet available. Pretty slick, though.

I just got my 5900M. Picture looks great, Music sounds great. It is deep (22" plus cables). it comes a basic remote and an IR keyboard remote. According to Kenwood tech support, today, the NetNamer software is not shipping yet, ETA "maybe 30 days". They said it should work with the old software for CDs only buy I can not seem to download that without registering a valid serial # for an older product (which I do not have).

oh well... baby steps, I guess :-)

OK. After much searching, I finally found and now have the 5050M and have 2 complaints. The first is that as far as I can tell, it has the same problem as the Sony in that it automatically starts playing the last disc played when it is turned on. There does not appear to be any way to disable this (which is the whole reason I returned the Sony). In addition, the selecting a disc by number is ridiculous. If you want to select disc 240, you have to press the 100+ twice and the 10+ 4 times! That means you would have 21 keystrokes to select disc 399! I can't believe someone really thought that would make life easier. That kind of engineering almost doesn't deserve my business! I had such high hopes for it too....That said, the picture and sound are great which is, of course, most important. Problem is as a result of the above, it makes using the ProntoPro that much more difficult. Pioneer/Marantz seem to be the only ones without this flaw....On to the next!

If someone has a workaround for either of these problems, please let me know ASAP before it gets returned.

PortersDad,

Are there any advanced codes that bring up a menu? Usually that will turn on the device first.

For all us customers in Europe: The DVF-J6050 is available. See [Link: kenwood.nl] for a sample.

As near as I can tell from a quick check this is the same product as the DV-5050M, with two exceptions. First, it is 110 to 240v multi voltage (duh). Second, the DVD player is NOT zone specific, but can play disks from zones one through six. I did not do an extensive comparison yet, but I "think" it is otherwise identical.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an equivalent for the 5900.

MSRP in Germany is approx DM 2.000,- if you are associated with the U.S. military, it's in the AAFES catalog for $529.00 I know what I want for Christmas!

Update: I've had time to review the specifications now, and my guess above appears to be correct. It looks to be just the same as the DV5050M, except for the differences I already mentioned.

Does anyone know if the Dv-5900M supports discrete power on and power off codes? It seems like a great unti from what I have been reading here.

thxs noah but i already bought it. i need to find an online place that has it cheaper so i can submit a price match to american express. they price match up to $250 per item.

my initial impressions. i am disappointed that you can only define 8 categories. it comes with 26 categories for music but none for dvd. my current pioneer has 10 categories for dvd which wasn't enough. the osd is very nice. i didn't see an option to make subtitles default on or off. i am hoping the default is off.

my computer is now where near the player so i am going to have to get a custom made serial cable. anyone know what the max length can be for a serial cable?

i am going to have to upgrade my receiver now. can anyone recommend a good kenwood receiver that goes with this beautiful unit. Since I am keeping my pioneer dvd mega changer, i need a receiver that can handle at least two dvd digital inputs. my pioneer 509 has 3 digital inputs but can only do 5.1 on one of them.
