My DVD player, which has previously only had problems with one of the documentaries on the "Sound of Music" extras DVD, out of over 500 DVDs, has had problems with 2 DVDs in the last month, in which all it will do is put up a message on the TV, "This type of disc cannot be played. Please insert a different disc." The two that I've had problems were were "What Lies Beneath" and "Almost Famous." On the other hand, the player had no problems with X-Men and MI:2, both of which I'm told use the new "Enhanced" regional encoding. Oh, and if this is a regionless DVD player, noone told me, it's a Panasonic (either an SC-DK1 or an SA-DK1, depending on whether you believe what's on the front of the player or the manual/box it came it) I bought at Best Buy.

Anyone seen this? I've emailed Panasonic, but I'm still off-kilter. Think I could blame them if I decide to replace my simple setup with a real home theatre setup :-)

I don't think it's a change in the spec now. I just got the player to start. I was playing around changing all the settings, and I had set the DVD player to think it had a 16:9 TV hooked up to it. Oddly enough, it started playing. I set it back to 4:3, and the error message popped back up. Thinking I had it licked, I set it back to 16:9, and the error remained.

For some reason, the DVD only loads on that player about 5-8% of the time. Not a happy thing, contacting Panasonic about a fix. Of course, they'll get back to me in two weeks or so.

Please drop my theard a line if you get a reasonable answer.
Thank you,
Scott

I finally got through to Toshiba customer service, they said that my DVD did need a firmware upgrade. Next, the upgrade center has not yet return my two telephone calls.

It may be your problem is similar.

Sometimes I think some companies just don't get it. Go to Panasonic's web site, and pull up customer support. They give you an email address or an 800 number to call. Being a mostly-online kind of person, I emailed. 4 days later, I get an email back basically saying "Yup, you've got a problem, call the 800 number."

Gonna have to find a Panasonic fixit center, find out how much it will cost, how long will it be gone, etc. Might have to buy another DVD player to get me through till this one gets returned (I'll be missing stuff, since this one has a DD receiver/amp built in) :-)

Or I could get a wide-screen TV, DVD player with progressive outputs, a good A/V receiver, good speakers, and a new entertainment center to put it all in, and delegate the existing one to the bedroom (right, I think I'm the only one that would want a subwoofer in the bedroom).
