I am planning to buy my 2nd DVD player very soon and here is my dilemma.
I have a Toshiba 36" direct view HD ready TV, so I want to take advantage of its progressive output. Do I buy a progressive scan DVD player or a standard DVD player + DVDO iScan? Is it true that iScan can also convert satelite signals (Dish network non-HD) to 480p? This seems to be the more versatile choice.

Please advise. Thanks

Yes, DVDO can upconvert composite and s-video to a 480p signal. either RGBHV or HD Y Pb Pr(recommended)It has 2 s ins and 1 compostite with priority sensing. For the money it is a great line doubler and I have had much luck with it.

Serv, a progressive player will proably look slightly better than the DVDO. But, if you will be using satelite, VHS, and most especially Laserdisc, the DVDO would be a good bet. I plan to get a DVDO for my LD player when I get my first HDTV or projector. It will make your lesser formats look tolerable. In a year or two when progressive players are even better and cheaper you could have both, hmnnn.... I've played around with a DVDO and a Sharp 100 LCD projector. I played LDs and DVDs with and without the DVDO, the edges were awful on LDs and DVDs without.

On some other forums, some folks are saying one of the best DVD players to mate with the DVDO is the Panasonic V80, sorry I can't remember the whole model #. It's interlaced output is supposed to be as clean as a Sony 7000. They're discontinued but many places stille have them. They run about $300 to $350. They're pretty reasonably priced....Just a thought, good luck with the theatre building, Rachael!

Thanks for the response, I am planning to get one of the Mega DVD changers ( I think its a great concept) in the near future, hopefully the DVDO will work well with it.
I have a Toshiba CN36XN ..something, its a HD ready direct view. It already has a built-in line doubler, do you guys know if the DVDO will still improve picture quality?

The line doubler inside most sets is pretty cheap. You can bypass the l/d, and go in vga and it would most likely improve the picture. Kinda one of those things you just have to play with.
