I just bought a new 870. When I turn the unit on It always loads the last DVD or CD I had used and starts playing It. Is this suppose to do this or do I have something set wrong? Is there some way to turn the unit on and it waits till you select a disk and then press the play button? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Werner

I believe that's a "feature". You can try disabling "autoplay" in the setup menu, but I don't think that affects this.

Hi Werner,

That is such a special fee-chur, isn't it.

Anyway, the quickest way I've found to avoid it (other than simply leaving the unit on all the time) is to press the OPEN button, then dial in the disc that you want and go.

Another method involves setting the Parental Control level of the player to the bare minimum, forcing the password prompt. At that point you can change discs or whatever. It's a little quicker than having the dvd play its FBI warning and menu.

Have fun,

jim

There are a lot of complains about the 850, has there been any improvment with the 870? How about the Disc Explorer, is it still the same? Can it play regular non Princo CD-R? Can I daisy-chain 870 and 850 and use only 1 optical/coax connection? Thanks

I think most of the 850 complaints continue to exist in the 870. I believe you're also still stuck to CDRWs or the Princo (only Sony's "dual-laser" players can play regular CDRs).

I have an Sony860 DVD changer. If the changer is turned off completely, not in standby, the changer will load disk 1 whenever it is turned on. I therefore have placed a CD in slot 1 so that the changer always loads the CD which does not run since I believe most CD's do not auto run or perhaps the changer only autoruns DVD's. This procedure prevents having to fight the FBI warning present on DVD's when trying to select a disk at startup. It also makes the use of a Pronto which has a DVD selector panel easier to use since the startup does not need to mess with the loaded DVD and the FBI warning during the disk selection process.

When you first turn the unit on select folder dvd ,This will bring up the disc explorer choose your movie or hit the folder dvd again and it will wait for your next move. Before i select dvd on my receiver i do this as soon as i hit dvd on my receiver the disc explorer is on the tv screen.

Thanks Larry,
The DVD player will not respond to any command while it is initializing after turn on. Unless you are watching the player it is easy to miss the moment it will respond to the remote and once the disk loads it starts to play. I am trying to use a Pronto remote with the 860 and would like a fool prove method to select a disk and have it play. So far the CD method has been the only thing that works without interaction from the person using the Pronto.
