Has anyone heard of any plans for a progressive DVD mega changer? I'd really like to have all my DVD's in a changer, but the image with progressive is so much better that I won't settle for any of the current generation of changers.

I know that's an option, but I tried that (sorta). When I first got my Sony 10HT projector, I had an interlaced DVD player and a DVDO (ver2). The image was pretty good, but when I replaced that setup with a progressive DVD (Toshiba 5109), the image was much better.

I guess I could go with a interlaced changer and a quadscan or vigitec to get better resolution than just the DVDO doubler.

I just wish someone would come out with a progressive mega changer!!!

So far it seems the "biggest" progressive player announced is 5 discs.

Stopped by my local drool-shop and the salesman there told me that Kenwood is coming out with a 400 disc progressive scan DVD changer as part of their "Sovereign" line. He said that the drop-ship date for these players is sometime in August. He was even nice enough to make a copy of the spec sheets for me.

The two model #'s he showed me were the
DV-5900M
DV-5050M

Both are progressive scan and play CD-R and CD-RW with MP3, but the 5900 plays DVD Audio as well and its progressive scan deinterlacer is DCDI by Faroudja.

I'll be interedted to see what kind of build quality it has...

Check out this thread that has the full press release.

There are two mega changers - one does not have the Faroudja processor or DVD-A. And there is a 5-disc changer that has the processor and DVD-A.

The mega changers are 400 +3. They call the extra area for rentals or borrowed DVD's/CD's "The Rental Zone" and have it trademarked.

Anyway, check out that post. These machines are pretty awesome, especially seeing as how you can hook it to a PC and download Title, Artist, Track info from Gracenote (CDDB) for music and OpenGlobe for DVD info. Ideally, no manual typing of any of the info.

Plus, apparently the GUI that Kenwood uses is great!

Oh, yeah. You can daisy chain two more for a total of 1200 discs at your disposal, Pronto!!!! ;-)

And the players have bass management built in. I could go on and on!

Later.......

i hope they allow backup to a pc of your catalog. i already filled up my 300 mega changer with dvds and the thought of having to re-enter that info brings me joy. i have to admit that so far the pioneer has been good. it has experienced 5 loss of power conditions and hasn't trashed my catalog. they claim it can hold the catalog for 30 days with the unit unplugged.

Since it is running PC software to download the Titles, Artist, Track, etc., you would think that you could save a file.

But, when I think about it, if you rearrange discs, you'd have to go through the re-cataloguing process again anyway.

How long could it take? I can get all that for one CD in 10 secs. So, what is that times 400. The CDDB (Gracenote) and OpenGlobe (DVD) databases aren't going anywhere. You can easily re-catalogue if you need to. That ONE of the really cool parts of this component.
