I have a Pioneer Elite DV-05 player and have experienced this problem twice now. Once with Random Hearts and again, last night, with The Abyss (during the extended version).....

At certain points the movie seems to pause, sometimes just briefly (and it's not the dual layer, it was too early in the movie), and then sometimes for longer periods. On both occassions, during both movies, the playback would pause, would get jumpy / erratic, and then popped the DVD tray open!

I returned Random Hearts (but swapped it for something else). I don't know whether to return The Abyss or live with it.

DVD or player? I don't know. It does happen in the same spots over and over e.g. it's not random.

If it happens on multiple discs, I'd say the player is -- for some reason or another -- having trouble reading the DVD. Remember the Abyss is loaded with "seamless branches" which have bothered some players in the past.

I've had the same trouble when I played rented disks that were dirty or smudged. I'd be suspitious of your source for disks not cleaning them.
