Regarding Titanic and DVD-18...

With Titanic being <4 hours long, are they planning to put the whole movie on a single side with 16:9 & 4:3 versions included?

I will be very disappointed if they make us flip the DVD over.

BTW, if anyone hasn't preordered, almost all the online DVD sites (Amazon.com, reel.com, dvdexpress.com, buyvideos.com) are selling it for $14.99. Don't pay more! And if you pre-order from DVD Express, you get a coupon for a free pizza.

I've heard Titanic will fit on one side of a DVD-9 disc with a widescreen non-anamorphic transfer, however absolutely no extras will be included. Expect a DVD-18 Special Edition at some time in the future.

From what I understand from Mr. Lucas, DD-EX is indeed 6.1 with an all new discrete channel directly in the rear (at least according to the hype surrounding Episode I). But, it's supposed to be devised to be backward compatible. But now the more I think about it I'm not sure that makes any sense at all. ?????????????????????????????
Last thing I heard about a STAR WARS DVD was that all 6 (yes six) movies were going to be released together in the future far, far away. I really hope that that doesn't happen as it would be about 7-8 years from now. For now I guess I'll just have to be content with the LD versions.

Well, I guess no reason why it shouldn't be backward compatible. Whether it's discrete rear channel or not, the technology should be similar to a pro-logic system, except that you're placing your speakers in the rear.

Currently, if you play a pro-logic (even 5.1, it'll be downmixed) soundtrack, and don't have a centre speaker, you can set the amp setting for centre speaker to phantom. No reason why you can't do that for the rears.

That's exactly what some people are doing now to simulate EX with 5.1 material. They hook the two rears up to another Dolby surround capable receiver, and drive the rear center speaker off of the center output.

I'd try it but the spousal acceptance factor is pretty low right now :) .

ADA is also manufacturing a unit that actually processes out the extra discrete channel. I haven't seen it but from the info I've gathered it seems pretty good.

There's an article in a British magazine called Home Cinema Choice, which tested out this. The results are not very good, because the discs are not specifically coded for it. So the soundfields actually sounded wierd/wrong/awful when fed through this pseudo EX system.

I am a dealer for the ADA 6.1 Processor that you are reffering to. The decoder doeswork very well, I have heard large scale dmonstrations of it with the Armaagedon DVD played through a cinema reference surround decoder and amps driving CAT speakers in big room and the rear pans and fly overs were incredible. I was also able to audition it in a small hotel room with atlanitc 470 Thx speakers and a cinema reference and the fly overs of Top Gun were very convincing even in a small room.
The Processor has a 12volt input on its's rear panel that will toggle on or off the 6.1 decoding. This is important because the extra rear channel does not sound good in pro-logic. In fact the ADA cinema reference has a new chip upgrade that will automatically turn the 6.1 decoding on, via the 12 volt output on it's rear, when Dolby Digital or DTS discrete bitstream is detected.
There are ways to enable this auto switching with non ada processors and recievers.
email me for more info.
