I am ignorant when it comes to VCD's and their quality and production. There is a VCD of 'Star Wars Phantom Menace'and I was considering purchasing, being the Star Wars nut that I am, but wanted to see if anyone here could offer any advice/opinions on VCD's. Especially on this particular movie (knowing that overprotective and restrictive Lucas didn't produce this VCD). I would appreciate any information on VCD's, how they play on DVD players, and if they are worth it. This is selling for $20 plus $5 shipping. Also, I will check the manual, but will my Sony 530 play VCD's? Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, your 5308 will play VCDs -- BUT ONLY IF THEY WERE STAMPED OR RECORDED ON CD-RW MEDIA. The 530 will not play CDR discs. Now, ignoring the fact that these are PIRATED copies, VCDs generally look very poor unless done right. I've heard about Star Wars copies floating around on the net -- there's only a few versions. One is so poor it's not even worth mentioning. The second has Thai subtitles all the time. I know someone's even produced a bootleg DVD version -- more on that can be found on The Digital Bits. Rumors are that an official DVD may come out this spring.
