I have a first generation Sony DVP-S3000 which I have good luck with. I recently bought Deep Blue Sea and the player won't recognize the disc. It plays fine on my computer and I took the disc to Best Buy and it played fine on the demo models. Has anyone reported problems with newer DVD's not playing on first generation players? Anything I can do about it? All my other DVD's play fine.

Mike,

My DVP-S3000 just died... 24 months after I purchased it. Sent it to Sony for repair, so it will be interesting to see if they fix it, or send me a different model.

I tried to play DBS on my Toshiba 3109 and had the same problem. I would put the disk in, and it would say "LOADING" for like a minute. I took it out, put it back in, same thing. One more time, took it out, rotated it 90 degrees(don't know if that makes a diff.) Put it back in, NO PROBLEMS. Ever since then the disk has played fine.

I work at Best Buy as a Service Tech. We use a Sony DVP 530 as our test machine. We had a couple of disks come back reporting the same problems. Tested them in our test machine, no problems. I chalked it up to DBS being a hybrid disk (DVD & DVD ROM) and being dual layer. Just a lot of data to process. Some machines just can't handle it.

Don't know if this might be the problem with your machine, just some useful info.

I ended up exchanging the DVD for a new copy and it played fine. Maybe the first disc I received was marginal?

Probably. I believe that's a dual-layed disc, so there could have been any number of things wrong with it.
