Audioholics has an interesting article about the very soon (Oct. 31) implementation of the Blu-ray mandated 1.1 profile and Sony pushing out a new line of players before the compliance deadline without the new profile.
The full article can be found here:

I found it interesting to learn how the Blu-ray requirements are still evolving and are considered still in an "unfinished state". At the fault of being redundant, I found it even more interesting that Sony has just released 2 new Blu-ray players on Oct. 17 that cost $699.00 & $1,299.99 each and they don't even have the 1.1 profile. Considering the fact that this 1.1 profile spec is mandatory by Oct. 31, 2007 why would Sony bring to market more high priced and obsolete players?

On another note, how do or how will the Blu-ray player manufacturers address owners of obsolete players (pre profile 1.1). Again, I'm just reading the article but it looks like the DVDs that are or will be higher profile spec will not work on the older players.

I would have thought so too, like all the firmware updates that Tosh does for their HD players, but the article says that firmware is only for software where the profile 1.1 spec is a hardware issue. I don't understand that. The Tosh HD firmware has updated things like 24fps playback, internet connectivity, disc playback, etc.

My guess is that the 1.1 profile is like the HDMI versions, hardware & not software.
