I just purchased a Sony 333ES Receiver and Sony 530 DVD. I tried to hook up the DVD optcal output to the receiver and I got nothing. No sound.

I found a note in the receiver manual that says "if your DVD has both optical and coaxial digital outputs, you must use the coaxial."

Is this true? If so, why does the DVD and receiver both have optical AND coaxial digital in/out?

I don't know why your receiver manual said that. My DVD manual advised me that I need both the stereo RCA audio outputs connected AND either the RCA digital OR optical digital connected. Some DVDs don't send 5.1 digital so neither digital output is used. My Sony receiver had to be TOLD to use the optical inputs for 5.1 digital. Be sure yours is set to. It could be that your receiver has no way to select, and will just use whatever signal it gets.

In you DVD setup you need to tell it to use Dolby Digital and if your reciever is not DTS turn DTS off, the steps should be in the DVD manual.

Pete,

I think the problem is your receiver not getting the signal or the input has not been setup to receive DIGITAL Signals. Try the normal RCA Audio and see if you get sound out of the DVD. If you do, then look up the manual of your receiver and select Use Coax or Optical for the DVD Input.
