Yep your right about those costs - it isnt cheap
!

If your brother sends it over and marks on the
form that it is a gift, and puts a lesser value
on it (say $100) I believe you will not pay either
duty - however it will only be insured for the
value you state.

Do you know of a way around the region 1 issue
?

Thanks

Tony

I am not sure what hardware hacks are available. Even if you can get the Sony DVP-CX985V to play Region 2 discs, it will not play PAL discs. Need to keep that in mind.

The Region 2 discs that I own I play via my HTPC since these Sony changers won't read PAL discs. I can encode my Region 2 DVD's to make them region free, then ripping to DVD+R for use in my changers. No sense in doing so however, as these changers won't read PAL discs. :-(

Hi !

I think I have the solution for all of your problems, but I only can write down the region codefree solution here: I'll be able to install this region codefree kit which allows you also to play PAL discs: [Link: jvbdigital.com]

Unfortunately they do not offer a kit for the 985 but they do for 875 !
I'm also willing to buy one of these changers... for me it doesn't matter if it's a 300 or 400 disc changer!

If you are also interested in buing the 875... post a reply or mail me.

Short of employing a hardware modification any given DVD could be encoded to ones hard drive making it region free. One could then modify the .iso files prior to burning to DVD+R, this to trick the player into thinking it is NTSC. This is what I did for the most recent Region 2 PAL DVD disc that I purchased as I will only ever have a DVD or two which may be PAL. This solution worked well for me.

As you live in US there is no need for you to get it cheap overseas with the ability to play PAL... but maybe it's very useful for 99mike99 (and of course for me).

BTW: It's not the best way to get a part from overseas as a gift :-)

Hi Frank thanks for the info but i want the 985
Take a look here
[Link: regioncodefreedvd.com]
They $479 + $99 delivery that is the best price i have
found

Hi Lowpro nearly all my DVDs are region 1 & my TV plays
Both PAL & NTSC

But I find this interesting more info please

One could then modify the .iso files prior to burning to DVD+R, this to trick the player into thinking it is NTSC.

Thank to all 99mike99

Maybe they can also tell you how to save tax and vat :-)

Meanwhile I've noticed that I can't buy the 985 because it's much too big in depth, I have to go for the 875: it's much, much smaller !
I've already found a shop which still has this unit in stock and also ships the way i like... I'm only waiting for a price from them.
But if they are too expensive I'll finally wait for a model which also offers dvi output for my projector.

Sincerely
Frank
