I tried looking for you and had no luck myself. Sorry. I own several of these changers myself and love them. Could you not purchase one from the states here?

That makes me sad. :-( Hope you can find one uk side then. Would almost be cheaper to come to the US for a visit, purchase one while you are here, and take it back with you. :-)

I've just found this link:

http://www.jvbdigital.com

They sell the sony dvd changers, with multiregion and PAL & NTSC. They arent particularly cheap, but its an all in price. The CX985 is about €580 + shipping.

I know its a steep price, but if you go back to the straight import price of $642, with todays exchange rate thats £352 which is not bad for a 400 disc dvd changer of this quality. As neither Sony or Pioneer have any plans for a european mega-changer there doesnt seem to be many other options to us - though I'd love to be corrected on this one !

Can you get a US one delivered to a friend in the States and then have them ship it over as a gift ? At least you would save the duty payments.

The other problem is that these units are manufactured as R1 only, and there is no quick multiregion change - the circuitry has to be modified to make the unit multi region and to give playback of both PAL and NTSC. To me this is essential as I have discs from all over the place. To this end, it may be that the JVB route is the only way ?

Yep your right about those costs - it isnt cheap !

If your brother sends it over and marks on the form that it is a gift, and puts a lesser value on it (say $100) I believe you will not pay either duty - however it will only be insured for the value you state.

Do you know of a way around the region 1 issue ?

Thanks

Tony

If you can't find a hardware work around you could always encode any said DVD to be included in the changer to your hard drive first making it region free, then burn to DVD+R.

Yeah i'd thought of that Lowepro, but there are over 120 discs that would need de-regioning and burning ! I think I'd rather spend the money on the chip conversion.

Its just a shame that it is soooo expensive !

Thanks

It is a shame that it's so expensive. Did you ever find out how much you'd have to put out if your brother bought one here in the states and shipped it to you?

As stated by HM Revenues and Customs, the maximum value of a gift shall be no greater than £36. Full details can be found here; item 3.5.1. Having said that one could, as Tony suggests, try it on, but I think that with such an item you'd be extremely lucky to get away with it.

One other thing to note. If one uses a prioritised delivery service (e.g. Fed-Ex, UPS) it's likely they will add a further charge for processing it through Customs; i.e. they will pay the duty and VAT (to maintain delivery integrity), but will charge a fee for doing so.

What if the brother were to disassemble one and ship it in pieces?
