FWIW, interesting piece in the LA Times the other day. Some crazy anal retentive man named Eallanardo is suing MGM over their widescreen DVD's (1.85 to 1 and 1.66 to 1 screen ratios) that purportedly showed more image width than their "standard screen" DVD's.

So if you dig out your DVD's from Dec 98 til Sep 03, and if the settlement is approved, you can exchange your eligible DVD's for $7.10 or exchange them for one from a list of 325 titles.

I'm sure in the near future some SOB will sue because he/she didn't know that a menu existed for DVD players and that his picture was distorted due to the fact that his player was set to 4x3 on his bitchin 16x9 plasma tv for over 5 years, or even better that his player was not set for Dolby Digital bitstream output and that he has only been listening to pro logic. I put the link below

Actually, this lawsuit has been discussed for some time as it started years ago. If you read it more carefully, you will notice he is suing over widescreen discs that are NOT wider than the P&S versions since the company took already width-chopped versions (P&S) and vertically-chopped them to make silly "widescreen" versions that are even further from OAR than the fullscreen.

No comment on silly lawsuits. Almost none are not silly, IMO. Oops, that was a comment.

Sounds like what sort-of happened with Back To The Future 2 & 3 DVDs - some scenes were oddly cropped and off center.
