I recently bought a Panasonic DMR E-30, thinking I would be able to use it, AND my Toshiba SD-3750, to make backup copies of my DVD's. I tried this tonight, and got a "copy protecyion" error message. so I take it this is NOT possible? I even remember reading somewhere that you would need a regular DVD player, as the "source" for the DVD recorder. It is for this reason that I didnt just get rid of my toshiba. why ELSE would anyone need TWO DVD players?

Do I REALLY need to get a PC DVD burner with DVD X-copy, etc? Or is there a way to do this with my E-30?

I DID so a search on here, and came up with little info.

It is illegal to make copies of copy-protected DVDs, even for your personal backup. Any ads you have seen refer to backing up non-copy-protected DVDs, like home movies. Marketing is a ripoff, don't listen to it.

www.dvdrhelp.com may help.

You may also be interested to know that your burner cannot record Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 soundtracks. Also, the technology can only use single-layer DVDs at this point. Meanwhile, virtually all DVDs released starting a couple years ago are 2-layer DVDs. So you would need 2 blanks to record 1 movie.

Would this apply if I were to get a DVD burner for my PC as well? (Not the copy protection issues) i.e., would I THEN be able to make a backup on ONE DVD, verses TWO, like DVD X-copy advertises? would it actaully record the 5.1 DTS signal?

thanks

DVD X-copy must either be compressing even further or is refering to double-sided DVDs. Today's technology cannot make a burned dual-layer DVD.

DVD X-copy will copy a full movie on a single DVD-R. It doesn't work all the time though, I have about a 50% success rate making copies (read backups). They make 3 versions of DVD X-copy, the expensive version will copy the, movie, menu's and special features, the cheap version does only the movie or only the special features. I bought the cheap version and wish I had gotten the full program. At over a $120 (full version) its pretty expensive for something that only works part of the time.

Actually, they are releasing 2 layer DVD burners and discs this year. I believe you can find them on meritline.com. As an option to burning on two discs, you can always put the movie on a two sided disc.

Other than this: [Link: dvdburning.biz], I wouldn't have high hopes. They only just started making 2 sided blanks.
