Apparently according to this guy:

it is possible to send a sequence of codes to turn a DVP-S7700 region free.
These codes are supposedly available on a "Service Remote Control" that Sony technicians use regularly.

His codes are written for the Omniremote which I do not have (anymore) and they don't seem to work when pasted in the RC5000 marantz.

My questions are:
Are all IR hex codes portable from one remote to another?
If not is there a conversion program for codes written for the Omniremote to the Marantz?
Do you guys think he's just full of it???
