DVD players have gotten so inexpensive these days, the remotes are made as cheap as possible. I'd love to find a universal remote with some natural controls for common DVD actions like fast forward/reverse, slow, menu, etc. I have an old DVD player with a great remote with a thumb dial for fast/slow forward/reverse -- no squinting at the keys in low light to find the right one for scanning or replaying. Anyway, I'd love to find a similar universal remote -- anyone know of one?

No universals have dials or shuttles, due to there being no standard way for them to be implemented.

MX-500 has a great layout that makes using it in the dark very easy.

being no standard way for them to be implemented. Remotes already have the functionality -- they have forward/back, fast/slow, etc, it's just a question of ergonomics in how they're provided. A thumb wheel (or equivalent) would send the same codes.

Check out the OFA urc-6131, it's billed as the PVR remote, but it has the largest library of DVD codes I have seen. There are 8 codes for apex dvd players alone. In addition to all the tranport keys you'll need, there are 3 labeled AUDio, SUBTitle,and ANGLE. [Link: bluedo.com]

Back to wanting an actual shuttle:
The main problem is that there are two types of shuttles. One is a ring that can rotate 360 degrees. This is easily replaced by two buttons, and similar hardware could be put on universals without much fuss. But the second type of shuttle has limited rotation, where holding it in a certain spot sends the code for a specific speed. This might require 8, 16 or even more codes to replicate the exact functionality - the number of possible "positions" in each direction isn't set. Because there are these two systems, you won't see jog/shuttle arrangements on universals.
With universal remotes, of course you can put what ever you want on any button. But in your first message where you wanted a "thumb dial" for eyes-free use, no, there are no universals with such things.
Now, if you're talking about newer JVC remotes with a 4-way pad, that's just a particular button arrangement used on those remotes.
