Interested in others to comment on the pros/cons, who will be "the" format on the different formats of DVD recording formats.

D-VHS, because it can record HD broadcasts.

Wow, that was a great response. NOT!

I don't think any of them will "win". RAM is the best for computer use, and the - and + versions are just going to be offered together in most recorders from now on. All 5 formats will probably stick around until they are replaced by something like HD-DVD-R or whatever. LG now has a computer drive that records all 5 of these formats, other companies are following suit.

IMHO DVD-R is superior, because 1) DVD- discs cost less and 2) DVD- discs are compatible with more DVD players that are currently on the market for all of us DVD rippers that might have an older DVD player.

I agree with Dorian;it seems that -R & -RW are more compatible with DVD players, and +R & +RW are better suited to computer use (where they're more likely to be played back on the same drive).

Poor substitute for JVC's D-VHS.

That doesn't even make sense. It's also a poor substitute for a good ham sandwich. So what?

Wait, don't tell me. This has something to do with Tivo, right?

D-VHS would be my pick.

Christ! Just ignore G50, he can't actually respond to questions like an adult. FYI, D-VHS is not aimed at the same target audience, nor does it do the same job. D-VHS is a poor substitute for any DVD burner. And vice versa.

RAM is the most hard-drive-like of the rewritables. It is easily capable of recording one show while watching another, similar to a DVR. It would be my choice if more companies supported it. While more are starting to, that doesn't help older machines that are incompatible. Of course, there's little guarantee that either RW format is compatible with your machine, either.

The problem with all these formats is compatibility with other machines that you might want to play your burned DVDs on. RAM is more or less guaranteed to be compatible, IF the machine says it plays RAM discs. Machines that claim to play -RW or +RW sometimes don't actually play all of them due to incompatibility with the burning software or specific brands of blank discs.

It's a big ol' mess. Some places for some info:

Starting off a reply with the use of the Lord's name in vain is always a good way of telling people how juvenile and disrespectfull you are.

I think a little bit more maturity is in order Spiky.

I see. So threadcrapping 3 TIMES in a stupid manner is what, advanced civilization? Get a clue, man. And shut up.

Perhaps you are unaware that passive agressive stupidity is meaningless and foolish in black and white text on the net?
