it has always been customary for me to watch A Christmas Story each and every year. The movie is just damn funny and is one that can easily be watched over and over again. So not wanting to watch it on television (even though one of the channels ran it for 24 hours straight) I went out and got it on dvd. Usually I dont read the specifics of the dvd's that I buy. I figure most if not all carry dolby digital and a smattering of extra content that is rarely worth watching anyway. I have become careful in looking to see that I grab the widescreen edition (why do they even make "full screen"?).
This time I was shocked - no widescreen format to be found, so I started to really read the cover, and to my shock - no dolby digital - not even stereo! The movie only comes in full screen mono!?
MONO?? For such a classic movie, I was really bummed. I bought it anyway - at least I can pause it and didnt have to watch commercials......

It doesn't surprise me. I picked up School House Rock, and guess what... full screen mono. There is one new song in dolby surround, but most of the dvd is mono.
Here's my guess (some pros can back me up or shoot me down): They aren't "remaking" some movies. When A Christmas Story was first released (before my time), I'm guessing it was only recorded in full screen mono. Without original data, you're not going to get widescreen dolby digital. Keep an eye out on older movies now released.

Um, wasn't Schoolhouse Rock a TV show? Hence filmed in 4:3 format? And old enough to be mono originally?
The movie is from 1983, one would think it would be a 1.85:1 film. But this is the kind of film (family) that will often be short-changed on OAR, maybe forever. Mono may have been the original recording. in the early 80s many films were still mono. I forget when stereo started coming out, but there was a long crossover time period.

wasn't Schoolhouse Rock a TV show the only Schoolhouse Rock that I know were little cartoon clips that played between the regular cartoons on TV.

If there was (or no longer is) a multi-track master of a recording (audio or video) in existence, there is no way, short of new recording, a la Fantasia) to re-release a film with a multi-channel soundtrack. The Terminator is an example of a movie that surprises many to learn that it was only done in mono. Larry www.fineelectricco.com
