I have a 3-4 year old Sony S550D player ($500 at the time... jeesh!) and has been a great player. I recently had gotten a new t.v. with component video hook ups and thought I would need to get a new player. Upon checking the back of the player it has component video out?!?!? I thought this was only possible on progressive scan players? Just confused... ugh!

Nope. It's only REQUIRED on progressive players. The video is stored in component format on the DVD, so using an interlaced player's component output should be slightly better than Svideo. Depending on your TV's filtering ability.
