Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem:

With a four-year-old in the house, most of our DVD purchases are from Disney. I've had a lot of these DVDs (after opening the shrink wrap), start playing fine in my player (Sony DVP-NS500), but at a point in the movie, will pause, then jump to another spot (usually earlier in the movie).

I then eject the disk, clean it, and have no more problems (unless my daughter gets her fingers on the back of the disk).

I had the same problem with a rented DVD. Is my player too sensitive? It's not that big a hassle, I'm just wondering if I'm the only one.

Thanks
SamG

Sam, the player uses the path of the pits (the tracks) to control the movement (tracking) of the laser pickup. If it can't see the signal, it can't track either. Too sensitive? That's a subjective term.

The fact that cleaning works says volumes about the need to keep discs clean. The player may need calibrating. Take it to a repair place with a 'dirty' disc. (Warranty?)

Thanks Larry. Unfortunately, I'm out of warranty. It hasn't gotten bad enough (cleaning just takes a few seconds) for me to take it in yet. Any idea what it would cost? (after reading some of the custom installers posts... i'm just looking for an idea (price range), not a quote) :)

Thanks

more than likely it wouldn't be economical to have that done (put that money into a new DVD player. If it's just the labor (and not a part like a new optical pickup) you're probably looking at around $60-$75 and you can figure another $75-$100 if you need the optical pickup assembly.
