I have seen these ads popping up all over the internet and even through spam. My mama always told me if it smells like a rat, it is a rat.

Well, there are a few possibilities:

1. It's a real ad, and it really works.

2. It's a real ad, but copies are only of CD-video quality, not DVD.

(in either case, the audio-video quality will be less than DVD, especially with a VHS source)

3. It's bogus, and an illegal way to obtain your credit card info.

If anybody has used this utility, please let us know.

It can be real, but it take a a lot of knowledge and time to learn all the concepts. I have been making copyies (re-encoding and re-authoring) DVD's for a few months and I can tell you that I've spent hundred of hours working out the right way to do it. It's more of a hobby to me than anything else. I really don't watch that much TV anyway. Two ways of doing this are:

DVD > SVCD (almost DVD Quality, on CDR's in players that support SVCD format. (most new players). 3 CD's per movie

DVD > DVD-R (DVD Quality), but with DVD-9 DVD's (> 7gigs), you need to re-author onto two DVD-R's to get the whole movie, or re-encode at a lower bitrate to fit on one DVD-5 (4.7gb).

Two places to go to begin your education:

doom9.org

Good Luck.

I'm sure that's all you get, and if that is all you get, you'll probably never create a playable disk. It takes quie a bit of knowledge, a collection of 15-20 software utilities (some free, some you have to hunt for), and a real good understanding of how the whole DVD format works. It can take from 3-20 hours per movie to re-encode, and if you make a mistake, it will look like crap and you start all over again. It's really neat putting a DVD on 3 30 cent CDR's and plunking them into your 5 disk changer and having basically a FREE movie, but it does take time and smarts. This I don't think you can get from the 'package'.

Slocko: Yeah, I've been getting spam mail from these guys or someone like them for weeks. Obviously linked to something I signed up for over the web. I get 'em two or three times a week, from the same people over and over again. But I delete them so fast, I never stopped to see if I could block them (most junk mailers, as you know, are smart enough to use different e-mail addresses every time... unfortunately).

And I think you're right about there being no software involved: the page actually says "Downloadable Packet", but there is a brief mention of software.... ... Mike

my guess is that you make money by trying to sucker others into buying the packet.

....Kind of like : "Send me $10 and I'll tell you how to make hundreds!"

Then, you get a letter telling you to place ads that say : "Send me $10 and I'll tell you how to make hundreds!"
