I bought a new Panasonic RP56 DVD player today and hooked it up to my 50 inch HD1080 Mitsubishi TV. Everything was great until I pressed the progressive scan button on the RP56, then the picture goes crazy. I have it hooked up through the component output. Does anyone have any ideas? Is my TV unable to play progressive scan video?

i am taking a wild guess here. i have seen some mits with dedicated component inputs for HD. maybe you are connecting the player to that input instead of the standard component input?

Make sure the switch on the back of the unit is set to progressive.

There is no progressive switch on the back of the TV. That's why I think that I'm out of luck. The TV is model number VS-50800 and it's over 2 years old.

You may have to go into your TV's setup menu and enable 480p mode for that input. My year old 55807 Mitsi does this automatically, but it is possible that some older one's don't. Also, it is possible that that input is not capable of 480p. Try the player on the dedicated 1080i input and see if it works. It is possible that on this older TV, only this one input was capaple of a HD or progressive signal.

I think that model may ONLY use 5-BNC (RGBHV) and D-SUB connectors for HDTV.
