Does anybody know if it's possible to use Windows Hyper Terminal to send and test serial strings? It seems as though one should be able to set up a connection through a serial port (Com1) and type in ASCII strings to be sent to a RS-232 controllable device. Anybody done this ?

Yeah, that's what it's for...

But you must make sure your comm protocols are what the device needs to see..

Data bits, parity bits, Stop Bits, Baud rate, Flow control, and what type of serial connections. Straight through or Null Modem.

Then, you can turn on Echo to see your characters typed back to you....hope this helped.

As long as it is just ASCII that you need to send. If you need to send symbolic characters or actual HEX values, you might want to use a more advanced port monitor. There are many shareware, freeware, and non-free port monitors available out there.

Matt -

where does one find the Echo setting? I can't seem to be able to see my ASC strings that I'm typing. Also, to send a string do you just hit the Return key or do you have to send it as a file?

You also may want to invest in a breakout box. This device will allow you to tesy and verify your cable
configurations
