I'm trying to get a client set up with DirecTV but haven't used the NEW Gemini receivers. They're "connected" to a HS17 but now have some Apps options for Netflix, etc. The remote is bluetooth.
I need to be able to control them with a URC system. From the few reviews they say it will work with "universal remotes" with DirecTV codes.
New features aside, this install has 7 receivers needed (5 1080, 2 4K).
I'm posting this as I look around the WEB for more info on this new system versus the old one.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Genie 2 has been in our market for several years now. The HS17 is the tuner, recorder, SWM switch, and power injector all in one. The genie clients are the C61 which is 1080 and the C61K which is the 4K model. The remotes are the same ones as the other clients and HR34, HR54 etc. Each client can be set to RF or IR. They use the same IR codes DirecTV has had for years. They can also be controlled IP, although you wont have the ability to turn them on using IP.

One note, I would use all C61Ks instead of a mix. The HS17 automatically manages the streams. If two 4K streams are in use, the third client will be limited to 1080p.

I went back and re-read this and realized you may be talking about the new stream box. The Gemini is a DirecTV Stream box running different firmware. So instead of using the Stream App, it connects to an HR54 or HS17 for the DirecTV service. You can then also run all the apps provided in the Google Play store. There is only one model and it's 4K. In the case of the HS17, you'd connect to it wireless depending on the size of the house. The remote control is a little different. It connects bluetooth to enable voice services and RF or IR for control. The IR codes are similar to the other DirecTV boxes, but I've seen issues with repeats and fast forward/rewind not working right, so you're better off capturing them from the remote. Discrete power is the same as the other DirecTV boxes as well.

Yes, it's the "new" Stream box. I wonder if other than the apps option is it a "better" receiver?? It looks like it can use Decas over coax to get a network signal from the HS17. I don't like the idea of the Stream boxes relying on WiFi.
Do you know if a dish is needed? From what I'm hearing everything is "streaming" thus sounds like a dish isn't needed. BUT if for some reason the internet is down you have no Directv "regular" channels.....

If you get the Gemini satellite version, it streams broadcast satellite content from the HS17, just like the genie clients do/did. In addition, they run a modified Android TV OS allowing the use of additional streaming video services.

The Gemini Stream version has slightly different firmware and is not capable of working with HS17 to receive broadcast satellite programming.

I am fairly certain the Gemini box, in both versions, has an Ethernet port. It works well in my experience and the DirecTV Stream service has been great for the few clients I have set up with it. Mostly older people who can't grasp other services lol

We have a client with an MX990 that did the upgrade.

1 - All codes seem to work well and it actually responding better than their old box (the old one was somewhat laggy).

2 - If you haven't set it up yet, the client need to be available for the swap-out as DTV will ask about 49 questions before authorizing the box. It took around 45-55 minutes of the customer being on the phone although it was already authorized to his account so we though that it might take 5 minutes.

3 - Didn't try streaming as another device was performing that function.
