I am planning on adding IR control to an exiting system. The video system includes two DBS receivers and OTA signals distributed via RG-6. My question is adding the IR to the coax, I read somewhere that the IR can not be addded to coax that is carrying satellite signals because the sat signal already has DC present on the line. I have a sat receiver in the bedroom, and one in the main room, there is a third TV in another room. I want to watch either receivers program with remote control capabilities in the third room.

Any advice.

Thanks,
Rich

That is a good one, I never really thought about using a "Skin Effect" to send IR data on a DSS feed cable with diplexers as well. But it does sound like it could be trouble. But if you are planning on using diplexers to combine and then split apart the signals you may have trouble also adding an injector in line on top of all that. Could you just send it over power line or wireless? I know that sounds kinda amaturish but if it's all ya got?!?

You can run IR on coax with satellite. There are a couple products that will do it, for your application I would recommend one by Avcast. It is very simple to install and the price is not too bad. Check out www.avcast.com

Xantech also makes IR over RG Injectors and Unjectors (Is that a word?)

Impaqt's right; Xantech started their ir business with products that ran IR over coax. They convert the IR to DC pulses and, through clever blocking, direct the signal down the coax. Sort of like herding kitties.

But, the issue remains with Xantech, you cannot have the IR on the same piece of coax as something that has a DC signal on it. One example of that type of signal is the signal between an LNB and a satellite receiver; another would be a composite video signal.

In the case described, I certainly could inject and extract ir off of the rf output of the satellite receiver.

You are asking if you can use the RF OUTPUT not the Sat INPUT from one of the sat boxes to drive another TV in another room set to channel 3 while transmitting IR over the same RF cable?

If this is so? No problem. You need a Xantech Xtra link 2 172-94 this setup works really well. However you will need 2 203-00 DC Blocking Filters that don’t come with the kit. 1 attached to the RF out put of the Sat Box and 1 attached to the TV RF input.

I am planning on adding IR control to an exiting
system.

For our exiting systems we usually just use a door on regular hinges, and a regulation door-type knob. Sometimes a screen door and a closer, too.

I read somewhere
that the IR can not be addded to coax that is
carrying satellite signals because the sat signal
already has DC present on the line.

The guys at Xantech (the old tech crew who were there before the newer more recent corporate buy-out; all the old phone guys are gone) told me NO.

Think of it this way -- if you have 13 or 18 volts DC on the line, how can you add pulsing 5 volts DC?

You could conceivably do it IF all your IR signals were modulated at ONE particular frequency AND you wanted to invest the money in a circuit at the unjecting end (I LIKE that word!) consisting of a really good narrow-band amplified filter followed by a circuit that would restore the square-wavish look of the modulated signal...in other words, it would cost too much.

I do installations for a living, but in your case I would go to Radio Shack and get their latest version of the PowerMid.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
