We have a client that wants a Sony KE42XBR900 (the unit with the outboard tuner /proccessor) and she wants the proccessor hidden away .....has to be over 30' away....the proccessor to display device is over a DVI cable and some other propriatory Sony cable as well. (Drywall is up already)We have a cat5e, co-ax and a 22/4pair shielded wire run....has anyone put DVI connectors on ? Will it even work?(DVI has 24 pins ...Are all pins used?)

Thanks

Your out of Luck. Sony does has a 10Meter cable available. from your description, you dont have enough condcutors to even attemspt to solder the necessary end connectors on.

I found pin config on a web site . Looks like there are quite a few non needed pins. I just need to know what Sony uses between their display device and the video proccessor. Can't get info from Sony.....yet. Anyone?

BS way of doing it but drywall is already up and filled.

looks like a sheetrock saw and sledge hammer type job there..

If that's the way the customer wants it installed, then they will understand that holes HAVE to be cut for the job to be done right (I'm not dissing your soldering skills- its just easier to use the cables MADE for the job)...

I ran into this once on an install... The plasma above a fireplace was wired for ever possible hookup option except one- the exact same situation you're in now. The customer was cool about having to have the walls patched.

Why would you run just that? If we don't know exactly what is going in we always run a CAT-5e, 22/4 shielded, and FIVE coax. The only thing one coax is gonna give you is composite, and that sucks on a plasma. You'll just have to tell your client that unfortunately she needs to either pick a TV that will work with the current wiring, or she needs to understand that you will have to make the needed holes in her new wall to run the proprietary cable that it requires...Oh yeah, and that it can't be 30' away either.

Sony's 10m (32.8 ft.) proprietary cable needs a minimum of 1 1/2" hole to fit through

We actually ran 2- cat 5, 1-22/4pr. shielded,
1- coax, and 1-18/4. This was to accomadate for Crestron A/V through an RGB input on the plasma (not into a Video proccessor then via DVI 15 meters to the display.) Our pre wiring was done to 4 possible plasma locations then they dropped the XBR900 bomb. Sony has a 10 meter interconnect available , but the run is over 10 meters even if their was no drywall.

I sense she will not be getting her Sony 42XBR900 unless she fold and puts the proccessor in the room somewhere.

Thanks for all your input

Sony's CIS tech team has tested all DVI cables longer than the 30" and none of them work, even with repeaters. The chance of getting it to work reliably with the wires you have is very unlikely to impossibe.

I assume you mean't 30 feet, not inches
Thanks for the info.

It may be time to show her alternative plasmas... (avoid Sharp and Pioneer, since they have the same issue)

Sony plasmas aren't very good, and if she sees that, then she'll go with one that doesn't have a PITA proprietary cable...
