How far have any of you actually ran a component cable made of RG-6 quad?

And how critical is the 3 RG-6 coax's being the exact same length to NOT affect any timing issues?


I want to run a Progressive scan DVD player from basement to 2nd story master bedroom Plasma display. I'm guessing about an 80' run.

Not to be a wiseguy, but wouldn't it be a lot cheaper and easier to just buy a second DVD player to keep in the Master BR? Makes changing discs less effort too. The longest component run I've made is about 30' with no problems. Exact same lengths are not necessary.

The Monster Cable rep told me to keep the lengths within .25" of each other, so I do...

It depends on the power output of your DVD player as well as cable & connector attenuation characteristics. I usually use .5 of a Db loss for each connector as a standard measurement. The rest is just math.

With respect to the difference of cable length the input device spec of the display should be able to clarify that question (i.e. + or - %latency).

So, without having to do all of the research and math wouldn't it be easier to just buy a second DVD player as previously mentioned by willywaxer.

This is a typical " Dr. and Mrs. Crazy " type customer. He wants all the goodies and she doesn't want to see a thing! They want all components placed in a basement utility room. I've done everything in my power to talk them out of it...ease of use, reliability, convenience...they won't budge. So far it's potentially a very profitable job...if I can get it to work.

Make your life easy and use an RGB or RGBHV cable. Liberty, Belden, Tributaries all make them.

I had a job that I took over after the first installer(an alarm guy) totally f**ked up. They only ran 1 RG-6 to the location of the rear projector, and the customer wanted all the equipment, including HD Sat. in a closet. There was an additional Multimedia run to the central distribution. The home was already compleated, and tearing up the walls was not an option. We would up with on leingh of RG-6 that was about 60 ft. long , and 2 RG-6 that were about 120 ft. long. The picture looked perfect. Since the current is flowing at the speed of light, (186,000 miles /sec.) our unequal lenghs will Not have a visable effect on the picture.
