For the first time I set up a Pioneer Laser player that acutally had an optical digital output. I've (re)installed them in systems before but they've only had analog outputs.
So, I connect the optical line to the DD receiver and it only gets ProLogicII. No menu on the laser machine to enable DD output like some DVDs have. I know the receiver is fine since it is doing DD on the DVD. I have the receiver set to the optical in because it says it's receiving the digital and not analog in from the laser player.
I started browsing the client's discs, and maybe 20% of them actually said Dolby Digital on them, but here's where it got interesting. The disc jacket said that the DD signal was on the 2/Right analog output and if the player put out noise thru the owner's system on the right channel in analog listening mode, select 1/Left as the output of the machine.
Anyone done this before? Do I run the right channel into the coaxial digital in on the receiver, or is this just not meant to work?
Thanks for your expertise!

Because of the limit on bandwidth on the audio track of LD's, the DD track is laid down in a modulated bitsream. You have to have a DD demodulator in order to get the DD track. The only unit I have used (many years ago)is the Lexicon piece (Don't remember the model number, sorry). There are several companies that made them, including Marantz. You might try Audiogon to see if anyone is trying to sell one. Good luck.<

The Optical output on Laserdisc players never did pass the AC-3 Encoded information. The Laserdisc player first needs a AC-3 RF Output which is a Coaxial connection. The you can start to worry about demodulators and such..... Yamaha had quite a handy little demodulator that was around $100 if I remeber corectly... Might be able to locate one on Ebay...

I still own 2 Laserdiscc players and a Ton of Discs.... (Actually, one of them is my original Pioneer DVF-727 DVD/LD Combo)

I'd have to agree. Hell Freezes Over sounds incredible on my Pioneer CLC-D505 laserdisc player. Of course that unit, while it does do DD via the AC-3 RF output, it didn't come with a digital/DTS output, so I added one.

I'll have to check next time I go over to the client's house. Is it possible it has an optical digital out but no AC-3 RF output? I don't remember seeing one but I will certainly check next time I'm there.
