Can someone purchase any of these systems retail and install, configure, and program themselves. I remember when SmartHome use to have an AMX/Panja system in their catalogs for $1300

Elan, though probably the easiest of the bunch to program, requires a VIA! Tools programmer which is only available to dealers.

Crestron, though it being the one of the most powerful and flexible systems, requires a steep learning curve to program. The very reason Crestron provides multiple levels of training.

AMX I am unsure of.

Elan Requires Special hardware to Program, Not a Do-it-yourselfer for the most part. Crestron and AMX both can be programmed by someone with enough patience and desire to do so.

There is more 3rd party support for Crestron programmers as your not going to get any direct tech help from either AMX or Crestron.

Does Elan require special hardware for just the VIA! panels, or even their Z-series touch pads? I'm looking at installing a system with the System 6 multi-zone controller & Z200 keypads. Do I need extra hardware to program all this?

Obviously, I'm a D-I-Yer.

Thanks

Yep. All of their Keypads/touch panels require the VIA! Tools hardware to program.
