Is there a speaker selector comparable to the Niles NLV-6, which has infrared controlled on, off, on/off, and master volume? What i'm looking for is one that has all those the Niles unit has, but with each channel having the ability to have it's volume controlled via infrared without having to install touchpads...

Customer wants to be able to use a remote to control sound in each one of his meeting rooms without interfering with the others...

Would a 12 channel ir controled amp do the trick?
You may need to buy an RC-68 remote to get the ir codes, unless you can find them in the files area.

If they already have an amplifier, the Niles RVL-6 would fit the bill.

You could also use a Xantech RAT1 for each pair of speakers. Or, if you're buying a new amp, one of the Xantech IR-controlled ones...

bringing one back from the recent archives...

I installed a 686-10 in the customer's office... he HATES IT... it's BUTT UGLY, CHEAP LOOKING, and in general, a total piece of (fill in teh blank)...

I'm embarassed to have installed it, to tell the truth...

Customer wants it GONE, asap...

Anyone have any other suggestions as to what unit to use (Niles RVL-6 didn't work they way they want, so that's out, too)- a unit that won't embarass me to install, and won't break the bank?

What do you mean "butt ugly" -- why would it matter? The 686-10 is typically installed out of normal view...

How many pairs of speakers do you need to switch, how do they "want it to work", and how much do you/they want to spend?

Sounds like your customer wants something that doesnt exist. Fact of the matter is, that once you go beyond the RVL-6, your can get into true multiroom for not much more money now. SpeakerCraft Easy6 is only $800 retail for a full 6x6 preamp.

What is it exactly that the RVL-6 didnt do?

ANd what posibly could cause you to be Embaressed by the 686-10??????? Its a Black Box Speaker selector and its cheap. its not designed to be the centerpoint of a $25k install. I've installed plenty of those, they've always done what they were supposed to and I wouldnt ever think of highlighing it in the rack. its usually behind a Blank panel or mounted in the utilty area of the home.

Is yours not turning speakers on and off? If thats the case, then you need to either fix your programable remote, or get the unit exchanged. If it IS doing that, well, then, sounds like you should not be embaressed by the product, but by you specing it. You obviously didnt know what you were installing.

This message sounds kinda rough, but if the product is doing what its designed to, then I really dont see where you should be embaressed by it. and No, I dont work for Xantech, and as a mater of fact, I install more Niles, Audioplex, and Speakercraft black boxes now-adays. But they (Xantech)make great application products. Just got to fit them to the correct applications.

it's the second 686 i've installed... first one fried within 10 minutes (it had a bad power supply), and the second one.. they just hate.

Whay they want to have happen is this... it's a psychiatrist's office.. they have a waiting room, 2 group rooms, an office, a kitchen, and a back patio that all have sound. They want to be able to turn the speakers on and off OR control the volume in the individual rooms with a remote control... The Niles is supposed to do this, but it's possible they have a unit that's gone south (either way, the Doc wants to put it at his lake house.. heh)

The way the installation was done, there's no way to add volume controls to the two meeting rooms (the IR controlled Xantech units would be perfect for the other 4 areas, but they're too expensive...)

This in conjunction with a 686-10 would do what you describe. Volume from 2 Locations, and Remote On/Off.

This is an incredibly strange request. Sometimes you need to really ask the client WHY they feel the need to do this and do your best to Explain why its silly and that there is NO cheap way to accomplish their stated goal.
