|5. How can the range and reliability of a control panel's network connection be |optimized?

|
|Use multiple access points in Infrastructure mode (interconnecting them with high-|quality network cabling and an ethernet switch), to allow roaming.

Hah, what a joke.

That does allow roaming...just not in real time.

It could support real roaming if you were to use some APs with 802.11F or 802.11r roaming

This issue currently has the ProntoTeam's full attention. I just have not gotten a timeframe when a firmware update might be available.

Lyndel, I somehow doubt that. just think about what solid roaming between APs will do to sales. every house will actually only need one remote.
If I have to guess, the pronto WiFi line will never become a full house solution. it'll stay a one-room solution forever.
Currently I'm going into some experiments with high gain antennas and possibly some amps... I'll post test results in a couple weeks I think.

The new TSU9200 uses Zigbee RF radio and no wifi. Likely there is no roaming issues with this one. I have the TSU9400 training class tomorrow. Also Zigbee RF, if I recall. Maybe wifi as well?

With Zigbee, the TSU9200 is even MORE a single room device... that's a stop back IMO.

the 9200 is not a competitor to the 9600/9400s anyway...

I see the same results. You just gotta hope that the remote is not carried from room to room, from ap to ap.

Where there is ap overlap, I believe the remote has a tough time picking which access point to use. I would assume it would grab the one with the "best" signal. Does not happen though.

This is a major, MAJOR, issue with anything that claims to be WiFi.....

Lyndel, I am curious to hear what philips had to say.

The solution to Roaming was to provide an extension to the Activity object where you could disable/reenable the wifi adapter to connect to different AP.

I think is is a member field named 'wifiActive' or 'wifiEnabled'. You may want to search this forum for that term to see if you find hits.

You toggle this member field to false, then back to 'true' to connect to closest AP.

If you want roaming that bad, go look at the Pakedge WAP's. In a multi WAP situation (only Pakedge WAP's) they will hand the client off between WAP's without the client (Pronto) knowing about it or so the have told me. Just make sure that it is there WAP's with WDS operating

I have no reason to believe it will not work. On the other hand a single pakedge WAP of the latest versions should easily handle a 5000 sq ft house when propely installed.

I use a Pront per room approach. It is what I wanted anyways

In order to get the TSU94/96/9800 change AP there is a script called Network Conditional Jump. Lets say you have equipment in a spot that you know the main AP is weak, and have a second AP there, the Script can disconnect the first AP and then logs on to the strongest AP when reconnecting. This has proven to be a workable solution in some cases we have supported our resellers.

Not really "auto roaming" but more like forced roaming, but still its something.

Script availible at the pronto site Pro Access.

I was told that to get true roaming you need 2 TX/RX devices within the pronto which they dont have . So i guess there will never be roaming..
Pronto still one of the best Wi-Fi Remotes,
