Hi

Does anyone know if the Boxee Box can be controlled using a Pronto either via IR or via IP?

Thanks.

If it has a IR remote it can be controlled via IR.
If it has built in a web server for settings or control it can be controlled via IP.

I looked at it briefly. It seems like the Boxee Box Qwerty remote communicates with the Boxee via WiFi, and there are android apps to control it, so you can use the pronto Instead of it, so:

Yes it can be done.

From a forum:
"Boxee receives it and sends out its details. Boxee uses the XBMC web remote protocol and this is mentioned in its specification. "

By the way, Boxee Box's qwerty remote looks awesome.

Hi

Yes, I wasn't sure if the quote from the forum applied to Boxee or Boxee Box as I don't think the latter has any IR capabilities.

Yeah, it's a great looking remote but we still need a single device to rule them all.

I'll wait and see what emerges as using a Popcornhour may just be simpler as I only access local content.

You may also want to check out Western Digital's offerings of media players starting at under $100. Lots of choices and certainly cheaper than Popcorn Hour. I use the WD TV Live Plus and am quite happy with it. They also recently added a new product called the WD TV Live Hub ($220 CDN). A network media streamer with a built-in 1TB hard drive and revamped interface. It also can be controlled via HTTP. A strong contender for the Boxee Box.

I probably should have waited for this one to come out ;) Oh well, maybe down the road.

Looks pretty cool! Very nice interface. Unfortunately, not really well known or advertised in Canada which is why I didn't even know it existed. Looks like it is available online only... no local dealers. Will check it out more over the weekend.

Thanks for the info.

The remote that is shipped with the Boxee is RF. They state you would have to use an IR dongle to use it with IR.

I heard a rumor that boxee removed the xbmc Http api, but can not verify. Would make sense since that api is being dropped from xbmc. One would hope they would go all the way and switch to the xbmc json interface which is under development. Perhaps they will when it gets stable

I am not a boxee or xbmc user although I have played with the later. I use the Dune line of media players. The Dune MAX includes a blu ray drive so it can act as a blu ray player, and a hot swap hdd bay so you can actually install a drive. Unfortunately due to legal issues thay do not provide any way to rip from the BR drive to the HDD. That would border on awesome if it was "one touch". The system is Linux based as are most today, but it is "Closed".

The dune IP enabled firmware is in beta but I can release a copy to Dune owners. It has been working for me for several months. I have a complete Pronto library item to control the Dune over its IP interface. It is on my web site in the downloads area as the Pronto Theater application. You will need the IP firmware. The app is written very simply and has a tutorial guide. The goal was to make it available in a form such that others could massage it for their needs.

Barry,
Can a Dune Prime 3.0 also work with the IP firmware? Should be possible because all Dune models have (basically) the same frmware.

thx,
Jeroen

I have the specific firmware for each Dune model. I have both a 3.0 base and a MAX operating in my house. The IP control for each unit is the same, but the firmware obviously differs.
